Made one solid save and a few clearances when called on but his defence did the rest of the dirty work. Made some good claims late on when Palermo pushed forward trying to equalise.

Made some good runs and passed well enough, nice link-up with Cuadrad. Has a habit of trying to play himself out of trouble – It worked today, but it could be a liability in future. Needs to move the ball quicker at times and do things a little simpler.

A good game from the centre-back. Intelligent marking, throwing his body on the line and picking up an unfair booking. Made one perfectly timed tackle. Strong display.

A positive start for the young defender, making some strong tackles while putting his height and physical presence to good use . Unfortunate to come off with an injury, hopefully it’s nothing serious.

Solid enough but rarely troubled until late on in the second half when Palermo really piled on the pressure. Impressive tackling and interceptions.

Miralem Pjanic

Strong start, testing Posavec with an early free kick before firing an effort directly at the keeper later in the half. Drifted in and out of the game before being subbed off for Asamoah. Expected more from him and it feels like he has more to offer the team yet.

A good overall game from the midfielder – 3 decent tackles, 87% of passes completed and a few half efforts on goal.

Much like Khedira, he put in a solid shift, making some good interceptions and breaking up attacks when Palermo looked to counter.

He’s cemented his place as first choice left-back – Some good runs and crosses but his defensive work was the highlight, intercepting two clear Palermo chances and clearing them well.

Gonzalo Higuain

Had a string of half-chances, testing Posavec on occasion. He formed a good pairing with Mandzukic, often laying passes off for his strike partner. Kept pressing the Palermo defence late into the game and he was unfortunate not to find the back of the net.

Looked angry and unsettled early on but he grew into the game as it developed – Had a great effort saved by Posavec in early in the second half before Higuain laid it on a plate for him….but his effort was incredibly weak. A third effort was finally in the net…but it was deemed offside. Should have done better given the chances he had.

Fielded a slightly weaker starting XI with one eye on next weeks Champions League game. Unfortunately pressed into early substitutions due to injuries. Got his tactics right overall but you still get the feeling this team could offer more, possibly with a switch in formation.

Made an immediate impact after coming on for Rugani, tearing up the right flank, playing some great passes with Dani Alves and generally making a nuisance of himself by running at the Palermo defence. His end product was a little disappointing….considering he found himself in the box more than once, he could have better.
